Limitless Expansion: The Prayer That Made Me Stop Thinking Small

There are moments in life when you realize that playing small is not humility, it becomes a limitation. I know many people, especially those with a West African background, sometimes have the wrong sense of humility. And one of the most powerful wake-up calls I have encountered in my walk with God came through a simple, almost overlooked passage in the Bible.
It is the prayer of Jabez!
The surprising thing I found is that Jabez, as a person was not discussed any where else in the Bible, except in two verses of the Bible. Jabez was first mentioned as a location in 1 Chronicles 2:55 and the next time we see that name, it was not a long sermon, not a deep theological discourse, but just two verses in 1 Chronicles 4: 9-10.
Yet, it carries a weight that can shift your entire mindset about growth, purpose, and impact.
Earlier this year, I read a book by Bruce Wilkinson - The Prayer of Jabez. It was then I realized this prayer isn’t just something to recite, it is something to live.
The Prayer
“Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.”
1 Chronicles 4:10 NIV
I personally have not come across a short, direct, and bold prayer like this one. And if we’re being honest, this prayer is a little uncomfortable for many of us. Because many of us have been conditioned to pray safe prayers in the name of humility or because of the negative connotation of wealth as sinful or worldly. But Jabez understood something many of us have not yet realized and I hope I can help you realize it at the end of your reading.
Many even pray “Lord all I want is you” and nothing else. Your prayer may not be wrong but if your mind see increase as worldly, you will live as a Righteous but poor person. If that’s what you want, that is perfectly fine. If not, I want you to pay attention. Let us dissect the prayer of Jabez, it is a four (4) fold prayer.
1. Bless me indeed: It is okay to desire more
Let’s address this first - asking God for blessing is not selfish, it’s not unholy, it’s not evil or worldly. I observed that the problem is not the desire for more, the problem is the motive behind the desire.
When I read this, I don’t see a man chasing comfort. I see a man asking for capacity. Do you know blessings come to us in accordance to our capacity to handle it? Because real blessing is not just what you receive it’s what flows through you.
And the bigger the blessing you’re asking for, the higher the responsibility,
The bigger the blessing you are asking for, the larger the vessel required to carry it,
and the bigger the blessing you are asking for, the stronger the capacity necessary to contain the blessing.
If God cannot trust you with more, He won’t give you more. So this prayer challenges me to ask: Am I becoming the kind of person who can carry what I’m asking for?
2. Enlarge my territory: Growth requires stretch
This is where things get real. Territory is not just about real estate or land. It is a prayer request for influence, greater responsibility and better opportunities.
If I asked you today, have you ever prayed for greater responsibility or strength to handle more, will your answer be yes?
Yet many of us just want big blessings not realizing it requires greater responsibility.
Your next level of blessing is in the uncomfortable spaces where you will be forced to grow. But as I said, not many people are ready or willing to grow because it is often painful and difficult.
And here’s what I’ve learned: You can’t pray for expansion and still cling to convenience. You MUST be ready to embrace discomfort.
Every new level will demand:
New thinking
New discipline
New courage
So when I pray this, I’m not just asking for open doors. I’m asking for the strength to walk through them.
3. Let Your hand be with me: Presence over performance
This part grounds everything. Because expansion without God’s presence is dangerous. If God does not go with you to your next level, you better not go.
If you are not aware, new levels brings new devils. The higher you climb in life, the greater the failure when you fall. For instance, if a baby falls from a chair, he can get hurt, cry and eventually recover but if an adult falls from a skyscraper, that’s a fall to death. This is the same thing with life.
In a world that celebrates self-made success, this line of prayer serves as a reminder that You are not the source, you are the vessel.
I’ve seen what happens when people gain influence but lose alignment. It doesn’t end well.
So this is the anchor of the prayer: God, if You don’t go with me, I won’t go.
Into the deal.
Onto the platform.
With the opportunity.
With God all your battles are already won. Take a minute to imagine what that looks like, see? it only happens when God is on your side. Else the devil will make a mess of you.
Remember if God be for you, who can be against you, tell me who?
4. Keep me from evil: Growth attracts pressure
Here’s something people don’t talk about enough: The bigger your territory, the greater the temptation. This is where you have more visibility, fame, more access, and the pressure is equally great. It takes God to not compromise or fall victim to temptation and trials at a higher level.
But Jabez understood that expansion without protection is a risk. So this is not a prayer from the place of weakness, it’s a wise one. Because it acknowledges that success is not just about reaching a level, it is about sustaining integrity at that level.
It took me time to realize that there are levels of wealth that could cause you to lose your faith and deny your Lord if you are not grounded in Christ. As a matter of fact, to enter some realms of wealth, you would need to prove your strength spiritually before you gain access.
The Part That Hits Me Most is when Jabez shares his reason“…so that I will be free from pain.”
This is powerful and here is why. Jabez, a man whose name literally meant “pain” refused to let his identity define his impact.
And that speaks to me deeply. Because many people carry labels from their past failures, rejections, and limitations. Here, Jabez shows us something different:
You can come from pain and still choose to become a blessing.
My Personal Takeaway
I don’t see this as a formula to receive God’s blessing, I see it as a posture. A mindset. A daily alignment that says:
I refuse to live small when God has called me to grow.
I will pursue expansion, but not at the cost of His presence.
I will ask boldly, but steward responsibly. And most importantly,
I will not allow fear to make my prayers smaller than my calling.
This is how I have been applying what I just shared with you in prayer:
“Lord, expand me, not just my opportunities, but my capacity.
Stay with me. Guide me. Guard me.
And let my life be a blessing, not a burden.”
So the real question is not: Does this prayer work?
The real question is: Are you ready for what you’re asking for?
Share in the comments section below what you have learned and how you will apply this to your life. This will help me and other people learn more from a perspective we possibly haven’t looked yet.

The Lord is in the business of enlargement of His faithful followers and whenever we are ready He is so faithful to do it. Oftentimes,we are not ready for the enlargement.
Believers' prayer is 'Lord, prepare me for divine enlargement'
Thanks for the message EA. . . Wishing you more inspiration.
What a timely and inspiring message! It’s so easy to shrink our expectations, but this message reminded me that God delights in enlarging our territory when our hearts are aligned with Him. The Prayer of Jabez is such a bold declaration of faith, and your reflection beautifully highlights the courage it takes to stop thinking small and start trusting God for limitless expansion. Thank you for this encouragement.
Thanks Emmanuel for this. It blessed me. If we're asking God for enlargement, then we should expect to be stretched beyond our comfort zone cos that is what it starts with. Sometimes or almost all the time, enlargement feels exciting in theory but uncomfortable in real life. Are we really ready to go down that path of God preparing us internally for the level we're asking for externally?
